Do rip currents cause drownings?

Yes. People have drowned in rip currents, but only because they didn't know how to escape. Swimmers who try to swim back to shore against a rip current quickly become exhausted and sometimes drown. Those who swim out of the narrow current (swimming parallel to the beach) before attempting to swim back toward shore almost always survive.
