Joseph Conaway is the Tiger Woods of the annual Mayor's Cup Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest. Conaway, president of the Bridgeville Town Commission, outspit the elected officials from across Sussex County Friday to win the contest for the third time. He also won in 2003 and 2001.

The victory was a benchmark for the contest. Sussex County Councilman Vance Phillips, who organizes the annual event, says there has always been an unwritten rule that if one person won three times, the championship cup would be retired.

Phillips says next year, he'll stage a watermelon eating contest.

Conaway's victory means eternal bragging rights for Bridgeville. His winning distance was 33 feet, 6 inches. He says 30 years in politics have given him greater lung power than his competition.
