Father killed, officers injured overnight

PHILADELPHIA - August 31, 2008 The first happened around 2:00 this morning when an officer was injured while rushing to a call about gunshots fired into a crowd in the Frankford section.

Investigators say a rap video was being recorded outside of Minnow's Bar at Bridge and Jackson Streets when someone suddenly fired into the large crowd. 19-year-old Bruce Lassiter from the 5200 block of Dittman Avenue was shot and rushed to Temple University Hospital where he later died from his wounds.

Officers from across the city were called to assist. One officer responding to the scene swerved to avoid another car and flipped his patrol car. It landed on a lawn at Tabor Road near Adams Street.

The officer was taken to Einstein Medical Center with neck and back injuries.

There have been no arrests, but officers have recovered a car matching the description of the shooter's vehicle.

The latest accident involving an officer occurred around 6:00 a.m. in the 4900 block of North Broad Street in the City's Logan section.

An officer from the 35th was standing outside of his patrol car guarding a crime scene when a drunk driver struck the officer's car. The collision forced the patrol car into the officer near Rockland Street.

The officer was also transported to Einstein where he is listed in stable condition.

The driver, identified as Kubeyi Akintayo, has been charged with DUI, simple assault and related charges.
