Police shoot armed suspect in traffic stop

WEST PHILADELPHIA - March 22, 2009 It happened just before 11:00 during a seemingly routine traffic stop at 61st and Chestnut Streets.

Police say a passenger from the car exited the vehicle and reached for a gun behind his back. Officers then shot the man at least once.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Steven Leary of West Zeralda Street, was taken to The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he is currently listed in critical, but stable condition.

A gun and narcotics were recovered at the scene by police. Leary faces narcotics charges and aggravated assault.

No officers were injured in the altercation.
