Off-duty officer kills would-be robber

COBBS CREEK - September 20, 2009

Lt. Frank Vanore says the 19th District officer was getting out of his car in the Cobbs Creek section of West Philadelphia at 1:50 a.m. when the two suspects approached, pointed a gun at him and demanded money.

Vanore says the officer had an off-duty weapon and fired once, striking one of the suspects. He says the other suspect fired at the officer as he was fleeing, and investigators later found a strike mark on the wall behind where the officer had been standing. No weapons were recovered.

The injured male was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead. The officer was uninjured. The other suspect is described as an 18-year-old black male, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8, with a goatee and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
