Swine flu vaccine lagging in NJ

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - October 22, 2009

Fewer than 1 in 5 of the 2,353 sites planning to provide the vaccine in the Garden State have received any. The state Health Department says New Jersey has received 234,000 of the 1 million doses ordered.

A health department spokeswoman says more should arrive Friday.

Production is running several weeks behind schedule.

U.S. health officials say there's pressure on pharmaceutical companies to crank it out along with the ordinary flu vaccine. The government itself also ran into a delay in developing the tests required to assess each batch before it is cleared for use.

New Jersey has had 16 swine flu deaths.
