Rest stop reprieve in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - January 21, 2010

The state is reopening 19 Interstate rest stops that were closed last summer.

The state transportation board gave unanimous approval to the rest stop reprieve after a short appeal from the new governor, Bob McDonnell.

He made the rest stop closings a campaign issue.

McDonnell says inmate labor and private contributions would help manage the costs of reopening the rest areas.
