Local family's close encounter with a whale

BEDMINSTER, Pa. - September 8, 2010

That's because a humpback whale suddenly jumped out of the water, making quite a splash.

"We see dolphins all the time, but we never see a whale," said Jay Maxwell of Bedminster. "We were looking and then I see a splash."

He and his family were six miles off the coast of Atlantic City when the whale started putting on a show.

Jay's 11-year-old granddaughter Caily was among those onboard.

"We came in closer to it and it was flipping out in the air, its body was all of the way out of the water. It was amazing," she said.

The acrobatics continued for nearly an hour when, all of a sudden, the 25 foot whale started approaching Jay's boat.

"It came and almost touched the boat with his nose and we're all looking down at it. It then went under the boat and came out the other side," he said.

Moments later, the creature simply disappeared from sight.

Jay said he has taken his family out on a lot of boating trips over the years, but they never see anything quite like this.
