"He goes around the lake and visits all his friends."
13 year old Boo walks around the lake regularly visiting his friends, but Friday's visit ended with him fighting for his life. Boo fell through thin ice into a frozen Greenville pond.
Maria Murowany heard Boo's distressed barks and ran out to see her son's dog's head poking out over the ice. A neighbor called 911.
"I called Boo. I said, wait a minute, wait a minute, mommy's coming. He's barking," said Maria Murowany.
Crews arrived shortly after 5pm and quickly formulated a plan.
Members of both the Elsmere and Cranston Heights Fire companies responded. Grabbing a row-boat from a neighbor, three men piled into this boat as five others remained on land.
The men used tools to break the ice so they could steer their way over to the dog that was forty feet off land.
"Going out was a little tricky," said one rescue working. "I could barely reach out and try not to tip boat at the same time."
"It was a lot bigger than I thought it was. We got him into the boat, and they pulled us back to shore."
The dog collapsed into the boat and was quickly bundled up with blankets.
Now home, he's getting special attention. The Murowany's have set up an extra heater to warm him up, plus plenty of treats, and no shortage of scratches.
"I have a very good friend who calls him the Wonderdog and builds on his reputation, his legacy," said Mark Murowany.
"I was really afraid we were going to lose him. Thank God for the rescuers that got him, said Maria Murowany."
