If you've heard of panzarotti, you can thank the Tarantinis, and the mother of 10 who served them at home. And you can thank her husband, Leopold, for peddling them on the streets of Camden in the 60s. In fact, he even offered them for free to get folks used to the taste of something they brought with them fresh from their frying pan in Puglia.
"When we were kids growing up, my mother used to make it for us as a treat," says Franco Tarantini. "She used to make them with a small coffee can by hand."
With ten kids to feed, the smell of homemade panzarotti permeated Pauline Tarantini's kitchen in Brinidsi, Italy.
"For me, the memory was after school, you would smell the sauce and the frying pan," says Franco's brother, Vincent.
In 1958, the Tarantinis immigrated to Camden where dire financial straits inspired Pauline to fry up a family favorite to feed her own.
"My mother stated making panazarottis at home and she would give them to my father and say go sell them," Franco says. "They used to be 25 cents a piece."
In 1963, they opened a store on Marlton Pike in Camden and put a new twist on a turnover machine to manufacture them. A long way from the coffee can!
"In slang version Italian, panzarotti means broken belly," says Franco's son Leo, a co-owner of Tarantini Panzarotti.
Panzarotti is a portly pocket of dough stuffed with homemade sauce and hand-grated mozzarella cheese, sealed up and sent to the fryer. Today the fourth generation of Tarantinis are pumping out 12,000 panzarottis a week at their Cherry Hill factory.
They shrink wrap and ship them as far as Maryland, where vendors can keep on stuffing them with anything from pepperoni to sausage to extra cheese, veggies, you name it!
You can find the Tarantini Panzarotti product across the Delaware valley, but Franco tells us if his name isn't on it, it's NOT the original!
