The shooting happened just before 11:00 p.m. at Germantown and Pike Streets.
According to police, they saw a suspicious vehicle with a bullet-shattered rear window and attempted to pull it over.
They followed it to Erie Avenue and Carlisle Streets, where it suddenly stopped.
The passenger got out and the car sped off, and when the police approached the man, he pointed a weapon at them.
The police say they fired at the passenger, hitting him several times.
He was rushed to Temple University Hospital and is listed in critical condition.
The vehicle was recovered nearby but the driver had fled on foot.
The car will be towed for prints and a gun was recovered at the scene.
Police are searching for the driver.
No officers were hurt in the incident.
