Art of Aging: Black Run Preserve

EVESHAM, N.J. (WPVI) -- A retired school teacher is now dedicated to preserving a little corner of paradise in South Jersey.

John Volpa retired from teaching after 37 years in the classroom, but he's still an educator. His lessons these days revolve around the Black Run Preserve, a corner of the Pine Barrens in Evesham, New Jersey.

"The Black Run preserve just happens to be a pristine corner. It's a quiet, unique beauty that is very special," he said.

John is trying to create awareness for the preserve, a spot that has been enhanced thanks to a generous grant from REI Co-op that's created 12 miles of new trails, maps, signage and infrastructure.

"It's incumbent upon us to be good stewards of the land and try to preserve it and protect it and encourage people to learn about it, enjoy it and share the sense of peace that so many people feel when they come out here," he said.

The 1300-acre Preserve is filled with natural beauty.

John is one of many volunteers who helps keep the preserve beautiful.

"Let's promote what's best in humanity. And this is a starting point," he said.

For John, the Black Run Preserve fulfills him in many ways.

"I'm retired from education, but I'm not done working. I was lucky enough to combine my passion with teaching - love of life on earth, this unique ecosystem where I live, it all runs together," he said.
