NEWARK, N.J. (WPVI) -- 150 New Jersey state troopers have arrived and are now on duty in Baltimore.

They are providing operational, investigative and logistical support, following an emergency request from the governor of Maryland for manpower and equipment.

Action News was in Hamilton Township Tuesday evening, when the convoy of heavy command trucks and other equipment headed out.

The task force of troopers was authorized by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to assist with public safety.

"We try as much as possible to help other jurisdictions when they need assistance and when we need assistance we called on them to help us out as we did in Superstorm Sandy," New Jersey Attorney General John Hoffman said.

In the city of Baltimore's time of desperate need, the state of New Jersey very generously is providing some of its most experienced troopers from urban areas across the state.

"They on a day to day basis work in some very difficult environments and they really do some tremendous things," State Police Col. Rick Fuentes said.

Troopers loaded riot gear and other equipment they may need while deployed in the city of Baltimore.

Upon arrival, they will be deputized as required under Maryland law to perform law enforcement duties.

Earlier Tuesday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan tweeted pictures with New Jersey State Troopers thanking them and Governor Christie for sending help.

Col. Fuentes addressed the group before they left.

"Certainly to be careful, maintain discipline in the ranks, exercise diligence, they're going down there to protect life and to protect property," Fuentes said.

The troopers are expected to be deployed in Baltimore for at least 72 hours.

Action News is told that could be extended if necessary or could be shorten if it is determined they are no longer needed.
