Jerry Sandusky's legacy is now helping catch child predators. A special team of investigators and attorneys created after his sex abuse conviction has led to the arrest of dozens of suspected pedophiles.
"I am a 53-year-old man who poses as a 14-year-old boy or girl a lot of times," said Gordon Goodrow, Supervisory Special Agent Child Predator Section.
The 14-year-old version of Gordon Goodrow is constantly messaging with strangers. The 53-year-old version is one of a number of investigators in the Pennsylvania Attorney Generals sector that delves into the ugly world of child Pornography.
The target: Those who view it, share it, and go online to lure kids into their sexual web.
"We know that the person on the other side has the full intention of exploiting the child that they think we are," Goodrow said.
Predators troll social media looking for prey. It starts innocently as a question about hobbies, sports, or a favorite band. It then moves to flattery.
The ultimate goal for some being a physical meet up.
The goal of those in the task force is to stop the predators, because child porn devastates its victims.
"It destroys them. It ruins their spirit," says Ellen Granahan, Attorney General Katherine Kane's twin sister.
A veteran prosecutor, Granahan has supervised the ramping up of child porn prosecutions.
In 2012 the AG's office made only 19 arrests. But in 2013 114 arrests were made, and so far this year there have been more than 70.
However, she warns Law Enforcement can only do so much.
In a world where elementary school kids have smartphones Granahan says parents must get involved.
The Attorney General's office has a program directed at parents of young kids to understand what lurks online. Granahan says parents need to know what their kids are doing - period.
Granahan says, "Instagram, their Facebook - I monitor every drop of that stuff, and that's what parents have to do. And that's my advice to them - don't worry about invading their privacy."
