2-year-old child shot in the head in Claymont, Del.

CLAYMONT, Del. (WPVI) -- A young child was shot in Claymont, Delaware Tuesday morning, and the incident appears to be the result of a terrible accident.

The 2-year-old boy is identified as just A.J.

"He's doing good. He's better. He's in ICU right now, so he's getting better," A.J.'s brother Dorrell Walls told reporters Tuesday night.

Dorrell had come home briefly to retrieve clothing before returning to A.J.'s hospital bedside.

When ask if he knew where the gun came from, Dorrell responded, "I don't really want to talk about that right now. He's going to be alright. That's all I know."

Police and paramedics were called out around 10:00 a.m. to the unit block of Cliffside Court in the Valley Run Community for the report of a shooting.

Neighbors say they heard a woman screaming and crying outside the townhouse. Police arrived moments later, followed by an ambulance.

Sources tell Action News that A.J. was playing with a gun when the weapon accidentally discharged, hitting him in the head.

Paramedics performed CPR at the scene before the child was flown to A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, where he remains in critical condition.

"Our officers arrived on scene and that's when they found the little 2-year-old had actually been shot with a weapon. We're not sure the ownership of the gun. We're not sure how he located the weapon," New Castle County Police Officer Tracey Duffy said.

Three adults live in the house - the boy's parents and his older brother. The little boy was home with his mother Melinda Stevenson-Graves.

Investigators spent the day trying to sort out the chain of events that allowed a toddler to access a loaded firearm.

Residents say the mother, father, and two boys are good solid neighbors.

"A happy go lucky kid. I feel very sorry for him," neighbor Bill Jennings said.

The police say there could be criminal charges depending on what their investigation turns up.
