Neighbors on Eucalyptus Street come together to decorate their entire street with stunning Christmas lights

SAN CARLOS, Calif. -- Eucalyptus Street in San Carlos is known for spreading the Christmas cheer by decking out 50 homes with dazzling Christmas lights.

Rod and Pat Liner started the holiday tradition in 1968 by decorating their home with bright white Christmas lights.

"We are the longest residents on this street," said Rod Liner, homeowner on Eucalyptus Street. "Everybody thought it was nice so one house did it and then another and it grew into a street that had ninety-percent white lights."

Over 50 years later, the street attracts thousands of visitors each year.

"Some people say that they come every night," said Pat Liner. "They say that they drive up here every night because they can't afford anything for Christmas but this brings them joy. It's about bringing family and old friends together for a great Christmastime."

Five years ago, Pat Liner bought a Christmas decorated mailbox, pens, and pads of paper for children who walked by could write letters to Santa Claus.

"I thought it would be a fun thing for kids to write something to Santa," said Pat Liner. "It just blossomed. Last year we had 9,000 letters to Santa where a lot of kids said that they are hoping for world peace. It's just heartwarming. If you could ever sit down and look at the letters, they all thank us for doing this and bringing joy."

"It is fun, wholesome families walking together with their dogs, with their strollers and doesn't cost any money," said Rod Liner. "You turn the corner of Eucalyptus Street and you say that there are a lot of good people on the street and in the houses on the street and this is where our heart is."

Eucalyptus Street in San Carlos will be open to visitors through Christmas night.
