TREDYFFRIN TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A traffic ticket scam is making the rounds in Chester County.
The fake citations have a surprising amount of accurate details and personal information, and that info may compel you to pay up.
Police say three Tredyffrin residents received such emails. They're designed to look like a speeding citation, and includes accurate date, time, speed, township road, and of course, a fine.
The email even purports to have a photo of the license plate, but when the victims clicked on the attachment it doesn't display a photo, but instead begins to install malware on the computer or device.
The accurate information has police suspecting the criminals hacked into some sort of mobile traffic app to gain the motorists speed and driving information.
Fortunately, no money was stolen in this scam. Police say you are never going to be emailed a speeding ticket so, if you get such an email, don't open anything and delete it.
