Locals bundle up for cold night in city

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The coldest night since spring had people unpacking the cold weather gear for the season.

"I had to pull out my pea coat as you can see it's freezing out here. I just had to keep myself warm," said Hillary Moeung of Rittenhouse Square.

Scarves and gloves were also the fashion of choice as chilly temperatures made it particularly tough for street musicians like Mike Madison to make sweet sounds.

"Any break I have my left hand needs a heavy glove, and my hands are only ever exposed to the violin when it's touching the metal ready to go," said Madison.

At the Linc, many Temple University fans were ready for the dropping temps, wearing extra layers and keeping close.

However, near-freezing temperatures came as a surprise for some of the 600 scouts camping out at Lighthouse Field in North Philadelphia.

Before they crawled into their subfreezing sleeping bags, troop 364 from Key Port, N.J., stayed toasty at a hand warmer.

"I hate the winter and I hate the cold, and having something that keeps me warm in a time like this ... is very important," said Julian Rebel.

Back in Center City, a group of ladies put the chilly air into perspective.

"I'm from Canada. This is not cold. This is not cold. This is nice," said Rose Ventresca of Doylestown.
