NORTH PHILADELPHIA -- A gas leak forced several residents from their homes in North Philadelphia late Tuesday night.

Residents on the 2700 block of North Garnet Street reported smelling gas around 11:45 p.m.

Philadelphia Gas Works arrived and went to work on repairing a four-inch gas line that ruptured.

Fire crews evacuated a number of houses, displacing at least 9 people.

A Septa bus showed up to keep people warm.

One family bundled up their 1-year-old baby girl and warmed up in a friend's car.

"I was scared for the baby, mostly my niece in the house and gas in the house and that was the most frightening thing," said Antonio Holland.

The residents have since been allowed back into their home.
