New FDA regulations for e-cigarettes

Up until now, e-cigarettes have been virtually unregulated.

Now, the FDA is taking control of e-cigarettes, hookah tobacco and other products.

No one under 18 years old will be allowed to buy any e-cigarettes or tobacco products, either in person or online.

And everyone 26 and under will need a photo ID.

Free samples will be banned.

And new warnings will be added.

On top of that, everything for sale now has to be reviewed.

"In order to stay on the market, manufacturers of newly-regulated products will be required to show just what is in the products, and that they are suitable for the market place," said Sylvia Burwell, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The FDA will also review any new products before they hit the shelves.

In 5 years, e-cigarette use by teenagers has increased nine-fold.

Critics say the industry targets young people with its ads, and candy-flavored, liquid nicotine.

The American Academy of Pediatrics applauds the new rules, but would also like to see a ban on those flavors.
