Red Cross asks for blood donors; numbers extremely low
Red Cross asks for blood donors; numbers extremely low. Registered Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on July 5, 2017.

Blood donations are often low during the summer months, but right now, the numbers are extremely low, and the Red Cross is asking for donations.

Over the past few months, donations were behind by about 61,000.

The Red Cross is urging new donors or those who haven't donated in a while to come in, roll up your sleeve and help save a life.

There are fewer blood drives during the summer, and many regulars delay donations due to vacations and travel.

The Penn-Jersey and Northeastern Pennsylvania Blood Services Regions must collect approximately 1,000 units of blood and platelets every day to meet patient and hospital demand.

You can make an appointment to donate, using the free Blood Donor app, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The Red Cross has scheduled more than 25,000 additional appointment slots at donation centers, as well as additional blood drives during July.
