Philadelphia Magazine's Hero Health Challenge semifinalists revealed

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia Magazine's annual Health Hero Challenge is underway.

It's a contest that helps support local charities and also shines the spotlight on people making Philadelphia a better place to live.

The nominees are in and voting has started. Adjua Fisher, editor of Be Well Philly, says this year's Health Hero Challenge highlights a wide range of local people working to improve the lives of others.

"We have some really, really interesting people who are hitting healthcare and health from all different angles," she said.

From a librarian fighting the opioid epidemic, to a non-profit helping kids get dental care or a crossfit coach tackling homelessness - these are just a few of the nominees.

It's now narrowed down to ten semi-finalists.

You can vote for your favorite every day until September 18th, then three finalists will emerge.

"I think this voting, the active voting, is giving you an opportunity to help make change in Philadelphia," said Fisher.

The finalists will be rallying for their charity. The winner gets a $10,000-donation, the two runners-up get $2,500 from Philadelphia Magazine and partner Independence Blue Cross.

Fisher says they received hundreds of nominations. The contest, now in its sixth year, gives Be Well Philly the opportunity to recognize good people doing great things.

"And hopefully it gets the community more involved in issues they may not know about or are already passionate about," said Fisher.
