Toppled trees lead to Millville church fire, damaged homes

Severe weather conditions caused significant damage across the Delaware Valley.

MILLVILLE, N.J. (WPVI) -- Firefighters battled a church fire Sunday in Cumberland County that appears to have been caused by the high winds.



Crews were called out to the intersection of Route 49 and Pearl Street around 5:30 a.m. Sunday to Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.

Fire officials quickly struck a second alarm bringing in additional help from neighboring fire companies.



The Action Cam showed a tree had collapsed due to the high winds on nearby wires. Official say it appears those arcing power lines resulted in the fire.



Firefighters are battling a fire at a church in Cumberland County that appears to have been caused by the high winds.


Action News is told the steeple of the church collapsed.



There is no word on any injuries at this time.



Severe weather left behind destruction in parts of the area.

Officials say strong winds are to blame for downed high-tension power lines, resulting in a small brush fire in Pennsauken, New Jersey.



Residents reported the incident around 4 p.m., which prevented the fire from spreading.



Officials say the line came down behind a row of houses on Union Avenue near Grant Avenue.



No houses were damaged and no injuries were reported.

The high winds knocked a tree into a home in West Philadelphia.



Crews were called to the unit block of North 54th Street around 6:30 a.m.



Police say a tree fell in the rear alley, and into the back of the home.



There are no reports of injuries at this time.

A large tree came crashing down on the front lawn of a home on Kingsley Road in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.



A husband and his wife were inside the home at the time, but were not hurt.



The high wind knocked down several trees on Park Avenue and Lakeview Drive in Collingswood, Camden County.



However, homes there appear to have been spared.





Action News viewer Cindy Clark sent in video of a downed tree in Pennsauken, New Jersey.



In the video, a pet rabbit can be seen. It appears the bunny made it through the storm unharmed.



The Get Your Rear in Gear Run and Remembrance Walk in Fairmount Park has been called off due to safety concerns.





The event raises awareness for colon cancer. Organizers have not announced whether they will reschedule.
