GALLOWAY TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Police say a missing 2-year-old child drowned in a residential pool in Galloway Township, New Jersey.

The calls for help first came in early Sunday morning for the report of a missing toddler on South Pitney Road between East Cresson and Elm avenues.

Police arrived and began scouring the neighborhood.

Soon they made a tragic discovery: the toddler was found motionless in a neighbor's backyard pool.

Emergency workers raced the child to Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center, but the child did not survive.

It was the third drowning involving a child in New Jersey in just two weeks.

Four days earlier, a 4 year old drowned while swimming at a resort in Ocean View, Dennis Township.

Several days before that, a 6-year-old girl vacationing with her family drowned in a pool in Wildwood.

It was not immediately clear if the pool in Galloway Township had a gate, or if police suspect any type of foul play.

The incident remains under investigation.
