PHILADELPHIA -- Coldilocks, the oldest polar bear in the U.S., is celebrating her birthday on a fittingly frigid day in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Zoo held a 36th birthday party for Coldilocks on Friday, as temperatures hovered in the mid-20s but felt more like the mid-teens. Dangerously cold temperatures and strong winds are blowing around the Northeast for a second day.
The weather was a birthday bonus for Coldilocks, who was treated to a block of ice decorated like a cake with carrots, blueberries, peanut butter and nuts.
For more than three decades, Coldilocks and her partner, Klondike, were ambassadors for their species in the wild, which are listed as threatened.
Their typical lifespan in captivity is 23 years. Klondike died in 2015 at age 34.
