WINSLOW TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Police say a total of five people were hurt, including two people airlifted from the scene, after the minivan they were traveling in crashed on the Atlantic City Expressway.

The accident happened at 8:30 a.m. Monday on the westbound side near Exit 38 for Williamstown Road in Winslow Township.

All the victims were believed to be teenage boys who were returning from the Jersey shore.

Police say two of the victims were ejected from the Chevy Venture minivan on impact.

Two people were flown to the Cooper University Hospital Trauma Unit in Camden.

The others were taken by ambulances to area hospitals.

There was no immediate word on the victims' conditions. However, none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Earlier reports had indicated only two people were injured. State police later revised that figure.

Police also said a preliminary investigation indicates the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Westbound expressway traffic was backed up for hours as medics worked to treat the injured and police investigated.

The accident scene was cleared by 11:30 a.m. An extensive backup remained hours after the accident happened.
