A woman was badly burned and her child pulled to safety after a freak accident at a gas station in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section.
It happened at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sunoco station at the intersection of Somerset Street and Aramingo Avenue.
Investigators say 21-year-old Jacqueline Lopez was pumping gas when a vehicle struck the pump. The impact knocked the pump over, causing it to burst into flames.
Lopez was seriously burned and rushed to the hospital. She is in stable condition in intensive care, suffering from 2nd and 3rd degree burns to her hands and from the waist down.
She is expected to survive.
Police say Lopez's 3-year-old daughter was in the car when the flames erupted. A passenger from the other vehicle jumped out, broke out a window in Lopez's car and pulled the child to safety.
The little girl was not injured.
Lopez is a student and works in customer service. Relatives say last night she had just picked up her daughter after leaving school.
The driver of the striking vehicle told officials she accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, smashing into the pump.
At this point police say it's too early to know if there will be any charges.
A full investigation is underway.
