National Night Out brings communities and police together across Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Preventing crime in the future is the goal behind the annual National Night Out.

Festivities were held across the tri-state area Tuesday night to help foster a stronger sense of community between residents and police.

In Philadelphia, events took place at 25 police districts across the city.

At one district in Fox Chase, dozens of families came out to meet Philadelphia officers.

"Supporting police officers - my uncle is a police officer right now," said Sianna Cruz.

It's a night to spread unity, and in Fox Chase, they've been hosting the event for nearly 30 years.

"We have 14 bikes this year. We do a one-mile fun ride escorted by police. Each kid who participates gets a raffle ticket and a chance to win a bike when they return," said Mark Mroz, the 2nd District community relations officer.

What makes their event special is the annual bike ride and giveaway.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel kicked off the raffle by selecting the first winner before heading off to visit other districts.

"National Night Out is an opportunity for the police department to come together with the community, get on the ground, building collaboration and partnership," Bethel said.

In Roxborough, families got a closer look at the mounted patrol unit and Tac Air.

There was also a visit from Elsa and face painting for the kids.

But you can't end National Night Out without a dunk tank, and the opportunity to dunk one of your fellow officers.

"It means a lot to us. We live in the 5th District, we have families in the 5th District. We just want to give back," said Angelica Grace, president of the PDAC of the 5th District.

Commissioner Bethel said he hopes to double the number of events next year.
