Backyard chicken coops to blame for rise in salmonella

The rising popularity of backyard chicken coops is resulting in a burgeoning health problem - salmonella.

This year alone, the CDC has received 961 reported cases - including 1 death - and 215 hospitalizations.

Officials are investigating 10 separate multi-state outbreaks, including many people who had contact with backyard chickens.

The CDC warns anyone around live poultry to practice good hygiene.

That includes: washing hands frequently and keeping the eggs refrigerated.

Also, don't wash eggs, which could spread the bacteria. And cook the eggs thoroughly before eating.
