Elmwood Park Zoo introduces baby sloth named 'Beanie's Baby'

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pennsylvania, is thrilled to introduce its newest star, Beanie's Baby.

The one-month-old sloth was born to mom, Beanie.

The animal will make its public debut Wednesday, inside Harmony Hideaway.

The baby sloth's gender is still not know. The veterinary team says that is usually not confirmed until around the one-year mark.

That's because baby sloths stay closely attached to mom early on, so they wait for more separation before a thorough exam.

In the meantime, to check the baby's heart, eyes, lungs and weight - they attach the baby sloth to a surrogate mom, in this case, a stuffed animal, to help them stay calm.
