EXETER TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A solemn procession and memorial service on Tuesday honored Central Berks Regional Police Officer Kristen Yeager, a 42-year-old officer, wife, and mother who died after a crash while on duty.

Her widower and three young children carried the ashes of their loved one as officers stood at attention and mourners wiped away tears.

The ceremony marked the loss of what police leaders described as a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"You served with honor, dedication and courage. You gave everything for the people you swore to protect," Central Berks Regional Police Chief Justin Johnson said during the service. He added, "They say the measure of a life is not in its duration, but in its donation."

Yeager had served with Central Berks Regional Police for the past two and a half years.

On May 29, she was responding to a call in East Earl Township when her vehicle left the road and struck a tree. She was ejected from the car and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Governor Josh Shapiro attended the service and addressed the grieving community, thanking those gathered "to honor the life of a true public servant."

Speaking directly to Yeager's children, Shapiro emphasized her role beyond the badge.

"Kristen had a servant's heart and she passes that onto her children as part of her legacy," he said.

The memorial was held at Exeter Township High School, Yeager's alma mater, where community members filled the football stadium's stands in a show of support for her family.

Many attendees said they felt compelled to honor an officer who served their community.

"We just felt because of the area we lived in and she served our community, it was the least we could do to show our respects," said Cayla Piccolo, a central Berks resident.

Yeager's death comes during a time of compounded grief for her family and community. Her father, Kenny Houck, a lifetime member of the Exeter Fire Department, died in April. Those who knew both described the losses as deeply felt across the area.

"We were just recently at her father's funeral and burial, and it's just a big shock," said Millie Geibel of Exeter Township.

The service concluded with her final radio call and the playing of taps, a traditional tribute to fallen service members and first responders.

The 24 notes echoed as a final farewell, honoring Yeager's life, her service, and her sacrifice.

Community members and local businesses continue efforts to support Yeager's family. Several fundraisers are planned, including an event at Rita's in Mount Penn scheduled for Wednesday.
