ABINGTON TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Abington Township police are investigating two burglaries in a Rydal neighborhood that occurred less than a mile apart and within 24 hours of each other, including one in which thieves stole up to $20,000 in valuables.

The first incident happened Jan. 17 around 8 p.m. on the 900 block of Meetinghouse Road. Police said the suspect or suspects attempted to enter the home through a basement window and a back door but were unsuccessful.

Less than 24 hours later, just after 7 p.m., a home on the 700 block of Washington Lane was burglarized. Investigators said whoever was responsible entered through a basement window and exited through a back door, taking several valuables.

"It was upwards of 15 to 20,000 dollars worth of items," said David Wiley, detective sergeant with the Abington Township Police Department.

Police said the two crimes, which occurred in the same neighborhood, could be connected. Patrols have been increased in the area as the investigation continues.

"Typically, they target homes that appear to be unoccupied, and usually it's a crime of opportunity," Wiley said.

He added that while the neighborhood is considered a nicer area, there is no indication that it was specifically targeted.

"It is a nicer part of town, so occasionally we do see a rash of burglaries in those areas, but at this point we don't have information that this specific neighborhood was targeted for any specific reason," Wiley said.

Investigators said burglars often go directly to master bedrooms, where valuables are commonly kept. Police are urging residents to take precautions when leaving their homes.

"We're asking people that go away, leave lights on, leave music on, make sure it looks like you're still at home, and just check on your neighbors," said Drew Kent, lieutenant of the Community Policing Division with the Abington Township Police Department.

Police also advise residents to notify trusted neighbors when they will be away, set their alarms and use security cameras.
