New Jersey man charged with murdering his aunt in Lumberton

LUMBERTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- A Burlington County man has been charged with murder after prosecutors say he fatally stabbed his aunt inside her apartment at a Lumberton complex.

Authorities said 60-year-old Vanessa Sturtevent was found dead Friday afternoon inside her home at the Sterling Glen Apartments after relatives discovered her and contacted police.

According to investigators, Sturtevent suffered stab wounds to her head and neck, along with blunt force trauma to her face and head. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Prosecutors said the investigation led New Jersey State Police to identify and locate the suspect the following day in Hainesport.

Authorities arrested 40-year-old Jason Mutschler, who prosecutors said is Sturtevent's nephew. He has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Mutschler has a previous conviction for escaping detention.

Neighbors at the apartment complex said the incident has left the community shaken.

"That's crazy... I have no words for that," said one man who wished to remain anonymous.

He said the violence was unexpected in the area.

"Nothing like this ever happened here before, so this is shocking to everybody."

Authorities have not released additional information about a possible motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
