North Philadelphia musician helped create the "Sinners" sound

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A North Philadelphia musician was tasked with making the Oscar-nominated film "Sinners" sound authentic.

Randy Bowland is an acclaimed professional guitarist, songwriter, and producer.

He was tasked with teaching one of the young stars, Miles Caton, how to play Delta blues guitar.

It all started with a phone call from an old friend.

"They want him to play Delta blues guitar, but he doesn't really know that style, and he doesn't really play guitar at all," he was told.

Bowland didn't play that style himself but was eventually talked into the project.

He spent eight weeks training Caton in Philadelphia.

"I want to give him all the kudos and praise, and I'm grateful. This could just be the beginning, because I would love to see where this takes me, because I never expected it," said Bowland.

Sinners is nominated for a record-breaking 16 Oscars.
