Officer injured after being hit by fleeing car in Strawberry Mansion

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia police officer was injured Friday night after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop in the city's Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.

The incident happened around 10:06 p.m. near 19th and Norris streets.

According to Police Inspector D.F. Pace, officers were trying to stop a vehicle in connection with a report of a person with a gun. Pace said the vehicle initially stopped but then abruptly reversed, striking two police vehicles and an officer.

Authorities said the officer was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle before the driver fled the scene.

Chopper 6 was overhead around 10:30 p.m. in the 200 block of West Winona Street and Wayne Avenue in Germantown, where investigators located a vehicle believed to be involved. It was described as a black Kia with California license plates.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital and is listed in stable condition, officials said.

Pace also said a police sergeant suffered bruises and lacerations during the incident.

No arrests have been made, but authorities said they are confident the suspect will be identified, noting that the incident was captured on an officer's body camera.
