Philadelphia launches Pride Month with calls for advocacy

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia kicked off Pride Month with what organizers described as the largest turnout yet for the announcement, unveiling a giant Pride flag at the Sofitel in Center City as community leaders urged attendees to pair celebration with activism.

"This is our biggest turnout ever. So let's give yourselves a round of applause," said Kory Aversa of Philly Pride Month during the event, which previewed plans for this year's festivities.

The celebration has expanded significantly in recent years. Tyrell Brown, founder and executive director of Philly Pride 365, noted the rapid growth.

"We started with 47,000 people in 2022. We were at 150,000 people last year," Brown said. With America's 250th birthday approaching, organizers expect even larger crowds.

Brown emphasized that Pride's purpose extends beyond festivities.

"Pride has never been just about celebration... It's a declaration," he said.

Speakers at Tuesday's kickoff highlighted the nation's history of independence and activism, encouraging attendees to channel that spirit into advocacy.

"Here's what I'm asking you, don't just watch this flag go up, let it move you to act," said Sheila Alexander-Reid, executive director of PHL Diversity.

"Progress happens when people show up. And that's what this space demonstrates," added Tito Valdes of the Philadelphia Office of LGBTQ+ Affairs.

Jacen Bowman, president of Philly Black Pride, reminded the crowd of the movement's roots.

"Pride exists because people refused to stay silent in the face of non-justice," he said.

As organizers honored LGBTQ+ leaders of the past, they pledged to continue pushing for equality.

"We will continue to do this work. But it's what we've done so far that has gotten us to the place we are now," said Philadelphia City Councilmember Rue Landau.

This year's Pride Month includes more than 100 events across the region, extending well beyond the city limits. The kickoff set the tone for a month of celebration, reflection, and continued advocacy.

"And remember everyone, June is Pride month," said drag performer Brittany Lynn, who is also the founder of Philly Drag Mafia and Drag Storytime. "Pride is something that should be celebrated every day in your everyday life."
