PPA expanding 'smart loading zones' in Philadelphia, citing positive impact on congestion

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Parking Authority will expand its "smart loading zones" due to what it describes as the positive impact on congestion in Center City.
The high-tech initiative uses cameras to track how long a car is in a loading zone and then mails $51 tickets to violators.
The program will go from covering 22 blocks to a total of 52 blocks.
If you park your car in one of these zones, you will need to register it on the CurbPass website. Then, you will be charged 10 cents a minute for up to an hour.
The PPA says speeds have increased along Chestnut and Walnut Streets since the program started in May of last year.

Plus, delivery vehicles are using loading zones twice as often, instead of double parking and blocking streets.
