HADDON HEIGHTS, N.J. (WPVI) -- Elementary students in South Jersey celebrated their 100th day of school by giving back to the community on Thursday.
Atlantic Avenue Elementary School in Haddon Heights hosted a school-wide event. Students gathered in the school cafeteria to prepare at least 300 ham and cheese sandwiches.
Each grade was tasked with preparing approximately 100 sandwiches. Kindergarten teacher Jilian Soriano organized this initiative for the fourth consecutive year.
All of the sandwiches were donated to the Cathedral Kitchen in Camden.
Before making the sandwiches, students learned about food insecurity in an age-appropriate way. They also learned about food safety and how to handle food products during the preparation process.
Students who did not prepare the sandwiches counted and put cookies in bags to accompany the sandwiches.
