PennDOT responds to snow and icy conditions

ARDMORE, Pa. (WPVI) -- PennDOT crews have been out all day treating the roads to make sure they stay clear. They're also looking ahead to tonight's dropping temperatures and any possible icy spots.

The snow was coming and going all day Tuesday. In most of the area it was a gloomy, cold, wet day, but snow wasn't sticking to the roads.

PennDOT's John Krafczyk tells us, "A concern of ours is temperatures are hovering right around 32 degrees, so we're right on the borderline of freezing. So we are actively salting hills, bridges and intersections just to be safe because we're so close to that freezing point."

All things considered, driving conditions across our region have not been bad at all.

PennDOT official say at this point, if this system produces enough snow to accumulate their hope is that it happens after the evening rush.

Krafczyk says, "We will prepare for 3 to 6 (inches), which is the largest amount we're seeing. So, we have trucks in place, trucks on standby we call in to deal with what we have to. Our concern is the freezing temperatures. Pavement's wet, that turns into black ice real quick."

So PennDOT is ready for whatever comes, with 260 plow trucks at the ready and 109,000 tons of rock salt in stock.
