Rain, melting snow combine for flooding concerns in N.J.

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- People will keeping an eye on creeks and streams in the next 24 hours as the rain and snowmelt combine to put much of our area under a flood watch.

Rain was pelting Trenton at lunchtime Wednesday. The thermometer topped 60 degrees, but people were clutching umbrellas along State Street trying to stay dry.

Pamela Watson of Trenton says, "Indian summer but I love it... I love it. I love the heat, I love the warmth and everything."

The Assunpink Creek was moving along at a good clip Wednesday afternoon. Parts of our area are under a flood watch and there are concerns about small stream flooding and in areas where drainage is poor.

However, the flooding is not expected to be anything like what hit Cape May County during the blizzard two weekends ago. That storm sent ice chunks floating through the streets causing damage to homes and businesses.

The rain and warm weather may help to melt away a giant snow pile off Perry Street in Trenton - it is three stories tall.

Some folks are hoping this weather will put an end to the piles of snow still left on some streets.

Collingswood resident Andy Cliver says, "I'm excited that it's going. We've been having a really nice mild winter to begin with and that snow was a little bit of a surprise."

And Eric Paul of Hamilton Township tells us, "Just for driving and walking. During the day I do a lot of walking in between the buildings I have to work on and jumping over snow puddles and snow dunes, it's just obnoxious."

And as for the ice that built up on the Delaware River a couple weeks ago? It's all but gone. There's just a little bit left on the Pennsylvania side.
