A driver died after a tractor trailer crashed into a car on Interstate-95 in Newark, Delaware early Thursday morning.

Two lanes of I-95 North have reopened after a deadly wrong-way crash near the Maryland state line in Delaware.

The crash happened before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in the northbound lanes near exit 1 in Newark.

Delaware State Police say a 2006 Chevrolet Impala was traveling south in the northbound lanes and hit a tractor-trailer head-on.

The sedan burst into flames and ended up in the left shoulder of the highway.

The driver, whose name was withheld pending notification of family members, died at the scene.

Minutes later, a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta traveling north on I-95 hit the front axle of the tractor-trailer, which had been torn off after the truck hit the Chevrolet.

That driver, 36-year-old Jerry Webster of Stony Point, NY, was not hurt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 30-year-old Francisco Corona of Elizabeth, NJ, was taken to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center and was being treated for injuries said to be non-life-threatening.

All northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for about four hours between the Newark toll plaza and Route 896 as police investigated and as crews worked to clear the scene, which included a fuel spill caused by crash.

Two northbound lanes were re-opened to traffic at 6:30 a.m. There was no word when the other lanes might re-open.

State police are continuing their investigation.
