Garden State Parkway reopens after crash, dump truck mishap in Cape May Co.

MIDDLE TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A minor two-car crash and a mishap involving a dump truck shut down the southbound Garden State Parkway in Middle Township, New Jersey for more than 3 and a half hours.

The car accident happened at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday on the southbound parkway near milepost 11.

A few minutes later in the same area, a dump truck driver lost control.

The truck's back gate popped open, allowing dredge material to spill onto the highway.

Police say up to ten vehicles then drove through the dredge material.

Some of the vehicles suffered damage and became disabled.

Officers arrived and shut down the southbound lanes of the parkway so vehicles could be towed and cleanup work begin.

Front-end loaders were called in to remove the dredge material, and crews washed down the road surface.

The Garden State Parkway southbound finally reopened by 11:25 a.m.

One minor injury was reported.

One person from the the two-car accident that occurred prior to the dump truck spill was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
