WASHINGTON TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Crews worked for more than an hour to rescue a horse that got trapped in a marshy area of Wharton State Forest in New Jersey.

It happened around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday along the Batona Trail near Iron Pipe Road.

A man and a woman were riding horse in the area at the time.

The woman's horse attempted to cross on a wooded plant when it slipped into the water below and got stuck.

The animal was stuck for more than an hour before crews were able to rescue it.

An EMS worker was kicked in the face during the rescue and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The riders were not injured.

After being freed, the horse was taken to a vet as a precaution but is said to be okay.
