SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Some residents of South Philadelphia had a rude awakening on Monday morning thanks to a water main break.

At some point overnight a main broke in the 2400 block of Woodstock Street.

A total of 50 properties were impacted, while 10 to 20 homes had as much as a foot of water in the basement.

The problem became quickly apparent as those living nearby found there was no water pressure.

"My instincts said to go to the the basement, take a look and see what we got," said Patrick McCann. "First time in 24 years."

"We thought maybe we didn't pay the water bill, checked that and nope, that wasn't it. We went down into the basement and water was coming in from the basement," said Michelle Pallozzi.

Homeowners scrambled for pumps and wet/dry vacs as the water department crew continued its search.

Bob Muller used a hose from a neighbor on a street behind him who had water and offered it to neighbors.

"I said 'If you need to get a couple of buckets of water, flush the toilets, put a pot of coffee on or whatever in the morning. Just come up on and help yourself," he said.

Repair crews are working to fix the main, and hope to have service restored by later in the day.
