Nature lovers set up cougar cameras
LURAY, Va. (AP) - February 4, 2008 But they're not going to be shooting the big
cats with guns. They'll be using see-in-the-dark infrared cameras.
Federal wildlife officials believe the eastern mountain lion is all
but extinct. However, dozens of people have reported spotting the
animals in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park and nearby areas.
Volunteers will hide 50 cameras along nearly 600 miles of the trail
in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. Organizers hope to find
additional funding to extend the cougar hunt the full length of the
2,100-plus mile Appalachian Trail.
