Del. leader wants information on hiring freeze

DOVER, Del. (AP) - February 12, 2008 Senate Minority Leader Charlie Copeland says the state now has a flexible hiring freeze.

But Minner spokeswoman Kate Bailey says it's not a freeze. Instead, she says the governor has implemented intensive hiring reviews in anticipation of a downturn in the state's economy.

Bailey says the Office of Management and Budget has to approve open positions at state agencies and budget requests are being reviewed by the governor's cabinet.

Copeland says Senate Republicans saw the economic downturn coming a year ago and wanted a hiring freeze. Instead, he says Minner raised taxes to balance the budget.
