Quakertown considers smoking ban

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (AP) - February 25, 2008 A proposal to be considered by the borough council Monday night would make it illegal to smoke in the Bucks County town's 140 acres of parkland.

Republican council member Ed Scholl calls cigarettes a "cancer cocktail." He says members aren't trying to take away people's right to smoke, but asking them to set a good example for children in the parks and refrain from lighting up.

Council president Jim Roberts says he believes the seven nonsmoking members will approve the measure.

A spokesman for a national smokers rights group criticized the idea. George Koodray of Smokers Club Incorporated says such measures have nothing to do with protecting the health of others but are merely aimed at showing disapproval of someone's behavior.
