Braves hammer the Phillies

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - March 4, 2008

"I've been trying to develop a backdoor slider on lefties and I ripped off a few good ones," Hudson said.

Hudson pitched three innings, giving up one run and four hits. He struck out two.

Hudson walked one and fell behind in the count several times in the first inning, but said it was just a matter of honing things in time for the start of the regular season.

Last year, Hudson was 16-10 with a 3.33 ERA.

Hudson likes the Braves' chances this season, especially with the addition of Tom Glavine.

"I think we have an outstanding staff if we get a little help," Hudson said. "Getting Glavine was huge. He'll eat innings for us. We can pitch with anybody."

Manager Bobby Cox liked the work of Buddy Carlyle, who struck out three in two scoreless innings, and newcomer Will Ohman, who allowed one hit in an inning.

"Ohman has been sharp all spring. That's three times he has been good. He is throwing hard, and Carlyle was lights out," Cox said.

Kyle Kendrick started for the Phillies and was tagged. He allowed nine hits and seven runs in 2 2-3 innings.

Potential closer Tom Gordon pitched the last inning and gave up three hits and one earned run. It was his second rocky outing of the spring.

"My command just hasn't been very good," Kendrick said. "Overall I need to work on my change and stop getting the balls up. I haven't been hit like this in a very long time, so I just have to forget about it."

Kendrick was 10-4 with a 3.89 ERA for the Phillies after opening the season in the minors last year. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he wasn't too concerned.

"That was rough for him, but he was throwing good for a while," Manuel said.

Mark Teixeira, Joe Borchard and Jeff Francoeur each drove in two runs. Francoeur has hit five doubles this spring.

Notes:
Cox said that Chipper Jones may be ready to play when the Braves travel to Lakeland on Thursday. Jones tweaked a hamstring during a weekend batting practice session, but Cox said there's no reason for concern. ... The game ended right before a downpour began.
