Man falls into pit outside Art Museum

FAIRMOUNT - April 25, 2008

Philadelphia police have rescued a 24-year-old man who fell into an eight-foot pit in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A pit that was supposed to have a metal grate covering it.

Early Friday morning, the man plunged into the pit at 26th and Benjamin Franklin Parkway in the Fairmount section of the city.

It took about 20 minutes to pull the man to the surface. He was taken to Hahnemann Hospital Hospital with head and neck injuries and broken ribs.

Police are trying to figure out why the metal grate was missing.
