EXCLUSIVE: Cops chase down suspect

CAMDEN, N.J. - June 10, 2008

Camden police tell Action News reporter Cathy Gandolfo that they stopped a car for a routine traffic stop along Mount Ephram Avenue around 1 p.m. When the car was run through the police computer, officers learned it had been stolen during a carjacking at the end of May.

As officers approached the car again, the driver sped from the scene down Mount Ephram Avenue and turned left onto Lowell Street. The suspect's car hit a vehicle that was parked along the street, jumped the curb and hit at least two children who had just left the Bonsall School due to Tuesday's extremely high temperatures.

The car continued on, brushed up against the wall and cut back across Lowell Street and hit a fence. The driver ran off and hid in a nearby house.

Medics are treating at least 2 children for injuries, but at this point it is not believed that any of the children were seriously hurt.

A short time later, according to police, the suspect came back out of the house and officers chased him down and captured him while Action News cameras were on the scene. He's now under arrest and facing a long list of charges including burglary, assault and resisting arrest. The suspect's name has not been released yet.
